Collaboration with the San Diego MESA Alliance

Part of the NSF/MESA Summer Team Internship program, 5 students from local colleges spent the summer of 2012 under my direction developing a shallow water experiment platform to simulate compressible flow phenomena using the analogy between compressible flow and shallow water theories.

The students involved in this project include:

  • Isa Aguilar (SDSU)
  • Jireh Imperial (Southwestern College)
  • Jesus Rodriguez (Southwestern College)
  • Madel Penaloza (City College)
  • Armando Armijo (City College)

Sponsored by the California Space Grant Consortium

Over the course of five days, 20 students from Southwestern College and City College were immersed in hands on research experience and training. Dubbed a "Train the Trainer Academy", the goal was to provide these students with direct and intense research experience by participating in ongoing research projects at SDSU and UCSD. Afterward, these students will present their experiences to middle school, high school and college students all over San Diego county in an effort to provide outreach and promote early interest in research.
