Tutor Training: CSE 195
Tutor training for
undergraduate classes at UCSD is provided mainly through CSE 195. This
is a class offered every quarter for 4 upper division credits and has to be taken pass/no pass. It is administered by Gary Gillespie. The class
meets once a week and Prof.Gillespie highlights the various standards that need to be met while tutoring students and
grading their assignments. During the class meetings, either a guest speaker
or Professor Gillespie will lead discussions on various topics related to
tutoring at UCSD in CSE.Tutors will learn how to help students solve their own problems, how to transfer their
problem solving skills to the students they assist, and how to help students
without giving them the answer. Tutors will learn how to be clear and consistent in exam and homework grading to cut
down on regrade requests from students. Tutors will be trained on a generic autograder that can collect
assignments, set up test cases with descriptions, provide differences between
student output and key output, distribute results to specified graders, and
distribute and collect scores when done. Tutors will learn about options of course administration tools to
effectively track scores. Additionally, the weekly meetings will provide a forum for discussion of experiences and
situations that the tutors have encountered so that all present can learn fromthem.Lastly, we will discuss CSE
logistics and University policies.
